NSW AAA Breakfast 7th October 2010 Reforms of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy - John Tuckwell

Date: 7th October 2010
Location: Union, Universities & Schools Club 25 Bent St Sydney NSW

John Tuckwell is the Senior Adviser dealing with trade, economics and agriculture at the Delegation of the European Union to Australia (the diplomatic representation of the EU based in Canberra).  He has worked for the EU Delegation for the past 20 years in a number of positions and before that was a Senior Consultant in Hassall & Associates’ Agribusiness Division (1988-90).  Prior to coming to Australia, John worked for 10 years at the National Farmers’ Union for England and Wales, including as Secretary of the Livestock and Wool Committee.  He has a degree in Agricultural Economics and grew up on a mixed family farm in Oxfordshire, England.

In the past the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has had significant impacts on Australia’s trade in agricultural products.  However, since at least the mid-1990’s the CAP has been going though an ongoing reform process to make it more trade friendly while still meeting the needs of European citizens and rural communities.

The presentation will explore this evolution of the CAP, including the next set of reforms due to take affect post-2013, and consider the impacts these have had and will have on the EU’s trade in agricultural goods.
