After completing an Agriculture Science Degree and an Economics Degree at the University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma in Management from Central Queensland University, he then went on to establish a 30-year career in the industry, starting as a research agronomist in the Darling Downs/Lockyer Valley horticultural region before running a suite of agribusinesses, serving as Managing Director of CropCare Australasia, Wesfarmers CSBP, Wesfarmers Landmark, Farmoz, and Grain Growers Limited.
